Thundery showers in 2nd half of August to be localised & of short duration
After a dry spell earlier this month, thundery showers will return on some days over the rest of August, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS).
But hazy conditions might be possible in the coming days, MSS predicted in a weather advisory released on Monday (17 Aug).

Thundery showers in August to be in late mornings & afternoons
The thundery showers over the next two weeks are likely to be localised and of short duration.
They will take place across parts of the island on some days, particularly during the late mornings and afternoons.
But on several days, Singapore will experience “fair and occasionally windy” conditions.
As such, the total rainfall for the period is still forecast to be below average over most parts of the island.

Southwest Monsoon conditions to persist
Southwest Monsoon conditions, which set in over the surrounding region in early June, are prevailing over Singapore and the region.
This means that winds over Singapore will blow mainly from the southeast or southwest.
The Southwest Monsoon is set to continue till September, MSS previously said.
Haze possible due to dry conditions causing hotspots
MSS also warned about the possibility of haze in the coming days, as hotspots with smoke plumes were observed in the surrounding region.
The fires, which are mostly in the southern and central parts of Sumatra and various parts of Kalimantan, are attributed to dry conditions.
These dry conditions are expected to persist in the coming days.
Thus, should the fires intensify, Singapore may experience hazy conditions, as prevailing winds are blowing from the southeast or southwest.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) will “closely monitor” the situation and will provide daily haze advisories if the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) enters the Unhealthy range.
Maximum temperature could hit 35°C
As for the temperature, most days will record a daily maximum of between 33°C and 34°C.
But on a few days, the daily maximum could hit a high of 35°C, MSS said.
Warm and humid nocturnal conditions are possible on most nights, with temperatures remaining above 27°C.
S’pore ‘mostly dry’ in 1st half of August, showers on only a few days
Over the first fortnight of August, Singapore was “mostly dry”, MSS said.
Brief showers fell on only a few days over parts of the island.
This was due to a dry air mass over Singapore and the surrounding region, leading to “suppressed” rain cloud formation.
‘Well-below-average rainfall’ across S’pore
During this period, “well-below-average rainfall” was recorded across the whole of Singapore.
The area around Changi experienced 100% below-average rainfall — the highest anomaly of these two weeks.

The highest rainfall for the fortnight was a daily total of just 39.2mm, registered on 2 Aug and 15 Aug along Seraya Road in Katong and Paya Lebar respectively.
Above-33°C temperatures almost daily
Accordingly, daily maximum temperatures went over 33°C every day, except for one day.
The highest daily maximum temperature of 34.9°C was recorded in Pulau Ubin on 14 Aug.
Warm nights were also experienced, with minimum temperatures remaining above 27°C across many parts of the island.
