Woman & security guard detained after Malaysian & Johor flags installed upside down

A Malaysian woman and a Nepali security guard have been arrested after the Malaysian and Johor flags were allegedly flown upside down at a factory in Indahpura, Johor.

Kulai police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee said the two suspects, aged 34 and 48, were detained on Monday (17 Aug) at 10.45am after images of the inverted flags circulated on social media.

Officers seized the two flags and a work schedule.

Guard allegedly put up flags after woman’s instruction

Police believe the 48-year-old Nepali security guard was the person who installed the flags, while the 34-year-old Malaysian woman allegedly instructed him to do so.

Both had no prior criminal record and did not test positive for narcotics.

The factory was temporarily shut for a day following the incident.

Suspects investigated under multiple laws

The two suspects have been remanded for four days until 21 Aug to assist with investigations.

They are being investigated under several laws, including:

  • Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, relating to improper use of national symbols.
  • Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, relating to acts that may cause public alarm or a breach of peace.
  • Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, relating to misuse of network facilities.

The offences carry possible jail terms and fines.

The security guard is also being investigated for allegedly not having valid travel documents.

Police said investigations are ongoing.
