Thailand Facebook pages share death of Thai woman in South Korea

A Thai woman recently died under unexplained circumstances in South Korea, local news outlets reported.

Subsequently, several Facebook pages in Thailand shared an appeal hoping to locate the deceased’s family.

The woman was later identified as 34-year-old Ms Piyawan (surname withheld), also known as Pla, from Kamphaeng Phet.

As they cannot afford the expensive transport fees, her family is now seeking help to bring her remains home to Thailand.

Local community leader identifies deceased

According to Khaosod English, a number of Facebook pages posted a photo of the woman, hoping to locate her family.

They also urged her relatives to immediately contact the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul.

Fortunately, a local community leader in Trai Trueng subdistrict came across one of the posts and recognised the woman as a resident of the area.

They informed Ms Piyawan’s relatives about the appeal and immediately contacted reporters.

Woman allegedly suffered unusually heavy menstrual bleeding

Speaking to local media, Ms Piyawan’s 69-year-old mother, Lam Yai, said her daughter had moved to South Korea to work as a traditional massage therapist seven years ago.

She regularly called home to check on the family and occasionally sent money to support them.

Ms Lam Yai said she last spoke to her daughter on 8 Aug, when Ms Piyawan told her she was experiencing abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding.

The mother, who said Ms Piyawan had no known underlying medical conditions, then advised her to buy painkillers.

The family said the news of her death came as a shock to them.

They said they would leave South Korean authorities to investigate the exact cause of her death, but the authorities have yet to make an announcement, Thaiger reported.

Family seeks help to repatriate woman’s remains

After Ms Lam Yai contacted her daughter’s colleagues, she learned that bringing Ms Piyawan’s body home to Thailand would cost around 200,000 baht (S$7,700).

Meanwhile, transporting only her ashes would cost about 100,000 baht (S$3,900).

As the family earns a living through casual work, they are unable to cover the costs of bringing Ms Piyawan’s body home.

The mother then appealed to the public to help so her daughter’s remains could be brought home for religious rites.

The subditrict’s mayor has also visited the family to offer support and is coordinating with relevant agencies to see how they can assist.
