Passenger defecates during AirAsia flight from Sabah to Shanghai
Passengers had to endure the stench of faeces after one traveller defecated in her seat on an AirAsia flight from Sabah, Malaysia, to Shanghai on 18 Aug.
This is allegedly despite flight attendants wiping the area with tissues and spraying perfume.
AirAsia has reportedly confirmed the incident and said the area was later disinfected.
Female passenger seen rushing to toilet
According to Mirror Media, a passenger sitting across the aisle from the culprit took to social media to recount the horrific experience.
They shared that the flight from Kota Kinabalu International Airport took off at 10.30pm.
At around 2am, when everyone was asleep, the original poster (OP) claimed they saw the woman seated across the aisle rushing to the toilet, holding a bag.
An extremely pungent odour followed.
“The smell gradually got stronger, waking everyone in the rows in front and behind!” the netizen reportedly recalled.
Another passenger who posted on Weibo said that the incident had occurred four hours into the five-hour flight.

Seat and carpet reportedly covered in faeces
The OP shared that a passenger seated in front discovered faeces on the floor upon turning around.
This prompted everyone else to notice that the culprit’s seat and the carpet were covered in faeces.
The OP wondered why the passenger did not just go to the toilet.
They claimed it was only less than five meters away and was unoccupied at the time of the incident.

Flight attendants wiped area and sprayed perfume
After receiving complaints from passengers, flight attendants allegedly began wiping the area with tissues.
They also sprayed perfume, hoping this would mask the stench.
However, the air conditioning being turned off during landing made the odour worse, and the passengers allegedly had to endure 40 minutes of discomfort.
The OP claimed they were not offered any compensation after the incident, adding that calls to the airline went unanswered.
AirAsia confirms incident
According to United Daily, AirAsia confirmed in a statement that the incident took place on 18 Aug on flight AK1516 from Kota Kinabalu to Shanghai.
It said that, while preparing for landing, crew members found an unsanitary situation in the cabin aisle.
As they were about to land, crew members prioritised the flight’s safe landing and conducted a preliminary cleaning of the affected area, wearing gloves and using towels.
Upon landing, crew members reported the situation to the captain and ground team, and arranged for cleaning operations.
Once all passengers had alighted the plane, cleaning staff disinfected the affected area to ensure the cabin met hygiene standards.
The crew members of the flight’s return leg were also informed about the incident before departure.
AirAsia said these procedures were done to properly handle the incident and ensure the safety and condition of the cabin environment and guests.
