Traveller vents frustrations at Changi Airport on X
Earlier this year, Changi Airport was awarded the world’s best airport title, for the 14th time since 2000.
With its seamless automated security, world-class retail facilities and the iconic Rain Vortex, the airport has become a key highlight for both locals and tourists travelling through Singapore.
For Dubai-based studio founder Florence Vuong, however, this was not the case.
Carpeted floors pose issues for suitcase mobility
In an X post on 9 Oct, Vuong called the decision to carpet the floors in Changi Airport “stupid”.

Some netizens disagreed, pointing out that trolleys are available for moving luggage.

Others stated the carpeted floors were necessary to minimise noise from foot traffic. This sentiment was echoed on a Reddit thread circulating the post.

However, Vuong continued to defend herself.
If I need to add an additional step to roll my luggage which has wheels, it’s bad user experience.
Later that day, she replied to her original post and declared Changi “the most incompetent airport I’ve ever witnessed.”
She warned future travellers to leave themselves ample time as “they’ll make life difficult for you every step of the way.”
Lack of crowd management, staff chaos at gate
As the post quickly garnered more attention, Vuong elaborated on her unpleasant experiences on 12 Oct.
According to Vuong, the airport had scheduled multiple flights due to leave at the same time from the same gate. This resulted in “hundreds of people” at the gate.
However, Vuong claimed there were only two security lanes open.
She stated that the staff allocated travellers to a third lane, only to cut it off in the middle. They redistributed people to the end of the line, where new travellers accumulated.
With several last calls occurring simultaneously, she said the staff started shouting for travellers to come forward if their plane was about to leave.
[…] so now a bunch of people are trying to squeeze in front of others who are already at the security checkpoint with their baggage open.
In response to netizens assuming she was simply unprepared for the airport, Vuong stated she had visited at least 20 countries in the past two years.
She also arrived at the airport “over 2.5 hours ahead of time” and owned a suitcase that “rolls well.”
Despite acknowledging that her local airports were imperfect, she pointed out that unlike Singapore, “the pride and joy of my people don’t reside in airport logistics”.
On 13 Oct, she updated the thread stating: “I fear I’ve offended the Singaporeans.”
Netizens divided on complaint, call for added context
The post received a contentious response. Despite remaining protective of Changi, one Singaporean was understanding of her grievances and wished her well.

Others pointed out that one individual’s experiences did not necessarily reflect everyone else’s.

On the other hand, netizens on X and Reddit refuted Vuong’s account. They shared consistently positive experiences travelling at Changi Airport.

Some netizens found the post vague, asking for more context and proof behind her experiences.

Vuong remains unmoved in face of backlash, mocks ongoing haze in Singapore
On 15 Oct, Vuong continued her online rant about Singapore, adding she was getting “bored” with the pushback received from Singaporeans.
She referenced the ongoing haze in Singapore, accusing the local government of seemingly caring more about “airport logistics” than the crisis plaguing Southeast Asia.
It’s been fun while it lasted, please focus on finding some oxygen now. The haze is about to orphan your last two children and you’re out here doing the most for terminal B.
The post generated an even more intense backlash, with locals criticising Vuong for making light of the current haze situation in the region.

Some agreed with Vuong that the reputation of Changi Airport constituted Singapore’s national pride. They felt her post was not worthy of national headlines.

Others discouraged netizens from giving her undeserved attention for “clickbaiting”.

Vuong previously pointed out that she was able to monetise the unexpected engagement from the post.
