Photographer Captures Photos Of Adorable Finlayson’s Squirrel In Woodleigh
It’s always a treat to see cute animals out in the wild in Singapore. Some of them even occasionally pop up in residential areas, delighting those who live there.
Recently, a woman shared photos of a Finlayson’s squirrel she spotted around the Woodleigh estate. She waited an hour to get the shots, but it was worth it. Just look at how adorable the critter is.

This apparently isn’t the first time the species has been seen roaming around the neighbourhood.
Waited 1 hour to photograph Finlayson’s squirrel in Woodleigh
On Wednesday (13 Sep), the photographer, Yane, shared two shots of the Finlayson’s squirrel in the Singapore Wildlife Sightings Facebook group.
In her caption, Ms Yane shared that the squirrel, which she referred to as a “resident”, is often seen around the Woodleigh area.
After waiting for an hour, it finally reappeared to look for food and she quickly snapped some shots with her camera.

The squirrel started getting active half an hour later and Ms Yane tracked its movements between the trees.
The squirrel eventually made its way to a lower branch to forage on some flowers and shrubs, and that’s when she took the pictures.

Clarifying that she’s not a professional photographer, Ms Yane called herself “a wildlife enthusiast who just loves to photograph Singapore’s wildlife”.
Speaking to MS News, Ms Yane said she spotted the squirrel resting high up in a tree on 10 Sep last year.
She declined to disclose the exact location as it’s near a residential area in Woodleigh.
Explaining her delayed post, Ms Yane said she does not share recent pictures of animals on social media to “prevent potential disturbance to wildlife”.
Same species seen in same area before
The Finlayson’s squirrel is certainly no stranger to being a photographer’s subject in Singapore.
Last Saturday (9 Sep), another photographer also captured several images of the furry rodent along Woodleigh Close.
It’s unclear if the squirrel in these pictures is the same one that Ms Yane saw, although they appear to have very similar markings.

Woodleigh isn’t the only neighbourhood where they make frequent appearances.
In March last year, another photographer got a great shot of a squirrel munching on some fruits in the Braddell Heights estate.

Someone even managed to witness one brave squirrel “playing tag” with a crested goshawk near Nex in Serangoon.
According to the National Parks Board, the Finlayson’s squirrel, also known as the variable squirrel, is native to Thailand.
It was likely introduced in Singapore in the early 1990s and is mainly found in the Aljunied area, although it seems like it has been taking over Woodleigh of late.
