DPM Lawrence Wong Confused Why TikTok Users Call Him ‘Daddy’, Thanks Them Nonetheless

DPM Lawrence Wong Responds To Gen Z TikTok Comments, Welcomes More

Many politicians leverage on social media to widen their reach and build a more personable image.

However, not all of them may use the platform to post casual content that’s not related to their work.

Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Lawrence Wong, however, has broken the mould through a video on his TikTok account (@lawrencewongst), where he responded to comments by his followers.

His clear confusion at the comments and his hilarious attempt at answering them stole netizens’ hearts.

DPM Lawrence Wong puzzled by ‘daddy wong’ nickname on TikTok

In his video, DPM Wong first responded to a comment that read, “thanks daddy wong!”

This nickname clearly left him baffled, although he stifled a laugh and nonchalantly accepted the compliment, saying,

I’m not sure why you call me ‘daddy’, but thanks anyway.

He then moved on to a second comment, asking if he was attending K-pop girl group Blackpink’s concert on 13 and 14 May.

The comment was likely referencing the audio he used in the video the comment was left on — ‘Shut Down’ by Blackpink.

Unfortunately, it seems like we won’t be seeing DPM Wong vibing to the song in the flesh anytime soon, as he revealed he was not attending the concert. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the group was “an amazing band”.

He also wished those attending an enjoyable time.

DPM Wong was then flustered by a third comment which complimented him for being a fashion icon.

Shyly denying that he was befitting of the title, the Finance Minister revealed that he always wears the same shirts.

He humbly continued, “When I find something that fits, I will buy multiple versions of it and I think that does make life simpler.”

The DPM then wrapped up his video welcoming more comments from netizens.

Maybe this is a hint that we can look forward to more editions of such videos.

Responses win netizens’ hearts

DPM Wong’s video won netizens’ hearts, many of whom were amused by his awkward yet apt responses to each comment.

One pleasantly surprised TikTok user quipped that he was not prepared for this type of content from the minister.

Well, we think it’s pretty safe to say that nobody was, although the content is definitely something most of us want to see more of.

Another amused user shared that they loved the new ‘Gen Z’-type content the minister is doing.

Multiple viewers also collectively agreed that the minister’s video was simply adorable and wholesome.

It is indeed heartwarming to see DPM Wong taking the time and making an effort to connect with his younger supporters.

Moreover, getting a glimpse of the minister’s more ‘chill’ and personable side is certainly refreshing.

Perhaps this will be the beginning of more Gen Z TikTok content by DPM Wong and other ministers in Singapore.
