Ending a dispute with violence could land you in more trouble than you’d expect.

Upset at a vendor who was allegedly rude to him, a man flipped a table of packed durians at a stall in Yishun, resulting in injuries and cracked phone screens.

He ended up having to compensate for the damages, and faced a fine of $3,000.

Vendor refused to let customer taste durians at Yishun stall

According to Lianhe Zaobao, the man visited the Yishun durian stall on 6 July 2020.

He reportedly asked to taste the fruits before buying, but the vendor refused, in light of Covid-19 safety concerns.

Instead, she suggested that he buy the durians to try them on the spot.

The man agreed, and was satisfied with the taste. He later asked the vendor to pick another box of durians with a similar taste, to which she replied that she couldn’t guarantee the similarity.

After receiving payment, the vendor placed a $10 change on the table. As the customer didn’t notice this, he asked for the money, and the vendor simply pointed it out to him.

Man found durian stall vendor rude

Thinking that she had thrown the change on the table, the man became upset, reports Lianhe Zaobao.

Though the assistant denied that she was rude, he became furious and flipped the table, knocking over multiple boxes of durians.

As a result, the vendor and assistant’s phones fell, causing the screens to shatter. The durians that fell couldn’t be sold anymore too.

While the table was being flipped, it allegedly hit the female vendor’s left elbow, resulting in some injuries. After the ruckus, the man left the scene.

For reckless behaviour resulting in injury to others, mischief, and resistance to harassment laws, the man was fined $3,000. He also agreed to compensations for the durian vendor, which include $140 to repair the phone screens.

Settle disputes amicably

Getting upset at situations may happen from time to time, but they’re no reason for us to react violently towards others.

Thankfully, no others were severely injured during the table flipping.

We hope the customer has learnt his lesson, after paying a much costlier price than what he probably intended to at first.
