Singapore Reports 59th Covid-19 Fatality On 16 Sep, Patient Was Unvaccinated
Daily Covid-19 cases in Singapore have risen sharply over the past weeks, with numbers roughly quadrupling since the start of the month.
On Thursday (16 Sep), the Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 910 new Covid-19 cases, comprising 803 community infections and 103 cases at workers’ dormitories.
A 72-year-old Singaporean with a history of medical conditions has also passed away from Covid-19 complications.
803 new community infections on 16 Sep
In an update late on Thursday (16 Sep), MOH reported 910 new Covid-19 cases, comprising:
- 803 community cases
- 103 workers’ dormitories cases
- 4 imported cases
This is the highest number of community cases reported on a single day.
Though there continues to be an upwards trajectory in the number of daily cases, it seems the rate of increase has plateaued slightly over the past few days.
However, Singapore continues to see an increase in the number of seriously ill Covid-19 patients. As of 16 Sep, there are 89 patients who either require oxygen supplementation or ICU care.
Unvaccinated Singaporean is nation’s 59th Covid-19 fatality
MOH also reported Singapore’s 59th Covid-19 fatality — a 72-year-old Singaporean woman who was unvaccinated.
The senior developed symptoms on 4 Sep before testing positive 2 days later.
Sadly, she succumbed to the infection on Thursday (16 Sep), nearly 2 weeks since the onset of symptoms.
She also had a history of medical conditions, such as:
- Atypical chest pain
- Graves’ disease
- High blood pressure
- Abnormal levels of lipid in blood
New cluster detected at Blue Stars Dormitory
The health ministry also detected a new cluster at Blue Stars Dormitory with 53 cases to date.
Transmissions had apparently happened between residents at the dormitory and the authorities are in the midst of testing everyone staying there.
Most of the other clusters being monitored saw more modest growth, with the exception of the Chinatown Complex and DHL Supply Chain Advanced Regional Centre clusters.
The Chinatown hawker centre and market cluster reported 17 new infections, bringing its tally to 242 cases. Though the vast majority of cases involve stallholders and assistants, cleaners, safe distancing ambassadors, and household contacts had also been infected.
Meanwhile, the DHL cluster has 11 new cases, making for 83 infections in total.
Most of the cases linked are staff at the supply chain centre. The new cases, however, involve secondary family members and workers’ social contacts.
Stay safe amidst rise in cases
With such a sharp spike in daily infections since early this month, it’s likely only a matter of time before we report 4-digit daily case numbers.
Though this appears inevitable, we guess the silver lining is that the rate of growth seems to be slowing down.
As Singapore battle its latest wave of Covid-19 transmissions, let’s all do our part by keeping social interactions to a minimum and practising good hygiene.
