SIA passenger checks condition & inserts drip into cabin crew member who fell ill on her flight
While Singapore Airlines (SIA) cabin crew are trained to provide medical assistance to passengers, an SIA passenger with emergency room (ER) experience found herself in the position of helping a cabin crew member who collapsed on her flight.
Despite being nervous, she checked his condition and inserted a drip into his veins, said XiaoHongShu user Nicole K in a post on 21 Oct.

Medical help requested on SIA flight from Chengdu
Nicole said the incident happened on a flight from Chengdu to Singapore — her first time flying with SIA.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the flight was SQ843, which departed the Chinese city at 6.32pm on 17 Oct.
Just after take-off at about 7pm, she heard an announcement requesting help from any medical personnel on board.

SIA passenger initially nervous about stepping forward
When Nicole heard the announcement, she did not initially step forward, thinking that there would surely be other doctors on board.
She also felt nervous about helping as she had not worked in an ER for some time, she shared.
In fact, she had only been “injecting filler and Botox” for the past 10 years, she added.
However, when the announcement was made a second time, she decided to see whether she could do anything to help.

Nicole found a young cabin crew member lying on the floor, appearing weak.
She first checked his pulse, which was regular but “very faint”, she said, also noting that his hands and legs were cold.

When she asked him questions, he seemed dazed and could answer only a few words, but said he felt nauseous.
She asked the cabin crew for a stethoscope and for them to help her check the man’s blood pressure, oxygen levels and blood sugar while she assessed his condition.

SIA passenger inserts drip into cabin crew on first try
Nicole eventually decided that he needed an intravenous drip, and asked cabin crew to prepare a few extra catheters.
This was because she thought that his veins might be challenging for her to find.
However, she managed to insert it on her first attempt, saying she was “thankful” that her time in the ER had not gone to waste.
Besides the drip, she also gave him anti-nausea medication and continued to monitor him.
SIA passenger stays with cabin crew till landing
After about 30 minutes, his condition improved, with his heart rate stabilising and his pulse growing stronger.
He also regained full consciousness by about 8.30pm.
Though there were still three hours left till landing, Nicole decided to stay with the man to keep an eye on him.
She breathed a sigh of relief only after the plane landed and he was handed over to the medical team, she said.

Passenger thanks SIA cabin crew
Nicole thanked the SIA cabin crew for their help, saying they were “incredibly cooperative”.
Not only did they help her get medical equipment, they also cared for and monitored the patient, she said.
As there was no professional medical team on board, every step required careful coordination, she noted.
Nicole also patted herself on the back for helping out even though she was nervous.
