Chatuchak Singapore Flooded With Ankle-High Waters On 8 Feb

After two years, Chatuchak Singapore made a triumphant return earlier this week, giving residents a taste of Thailand without having to spend on aeroplane tickets.

While the Covid-19 pandemic has stopped being a hindrance factor to the market’s organisers, recent events show that other forces of nature are still at work.

After a downpour yesterday (8 Feb) evening, the event site was flooded.

Some visitors even had to walk around with their ankles submerged in water.

Though the flooding did not seem too severe, some could not help but compare Chatuchak Singapore to a ‘floating market’.

At about 5pm on Wednesday (8 Feb), TikTok user @ucu_kim shared a video of the flooded situation at Chatuchak Singapore.

At the start of the video, the user carefully wades through ankle-height water while wearing a pair of sliders.

The video then transitions to another scene that shows a large unoccupied area completely flooded.

Though the flooding situation affected some of the stalls, others were spared seemingly by virtue of them being on elevated ground.

One stall owner documents her experience with the bad weather.

In a TikTok clip similarly posted on 8 Feb, the owner of Kuehclouds, a brand that sells phone straps, documented the downpour worsening over time.

The event led to a “mini flood” at her stall.

At the end of the video, the stall owner was seen pushing a wheeled suitcase through the mildly flooded pavement

While both videos did not disclose the time of the flood, PUB warned about “heavy rain” over Southern, Western, and Central Singapore from about 5.15pm to 6.30pm on Wednesday (8 Feb).

PUB subsequently issued warnings that water levels along Tanjong Pagar Road/Craig Road and Dunearn Road had risen to near-flood levels.

Some joke that Chatuchak Singapore turned into a ‘floating market’

While the flood inconvenienced those at Chatuchak Singapore, netizens could not help but respond in jest upon seeing footage of the situation.

This TikTok user hilariously suggested that Chatuchak Singapore should change its name to “floating market” instead.

Another joked that Chatuchak Singapore also brought along the Songkran experience, in addition to the Thai night market that Singaporeans have so dearly missed.

In more positive news, this TikTok user said the rain stopped at about 8pm and that things were “ok” then.
