Overgrown plant from 2nd-floor HDB unit reaches ground floor
Living in HDB units generally means there’s little space for plant lovers in Singapore to grow their own flora.
This lack of horizontal space may have inspired one resident in Woodlands, whose plant on a second-floor HDB unit was seen seemingly reaching the ground floor.
A photo of the overgrown plant was shared in the Facebook group Home Gardening Singapore on Tuesday (9 June).
Balcony with plants aplenty
The Original Poster (OP) captured a photo of the overgrown plant from outside the HDB building.
The unidentified leafy plant begins from the balcony of a second-floor unit filled with other greenery.

As the bunch of vines astonishingly appears to reach the ground floor, the OP cheekily wrote: “Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair…”
A singular vine is also hanging from the other side of a balcony, while another is strewn on the ground floor, as if it had been cut or snapped from a plant.
Netizens have mixed reactions
The overgrown plant gained mixed reactions on social media.
Some urged the OP to cut it, while others called the plant a ” public nuisance” and the owner “inconsiderate”.

One user was concerned that the plant may prompt the town council to inspect the whole area, causing inconvenience to other plant owners.

However, another netizen believes that residents would still be allowed to keep their plants as long as they are tidy and do not hold stagnant water.
Others thought the plant should be left alone, with one commenter saying it provides “better air and good greens to look at”.

Meanwhile, one user quipped that the overgrown plant would make a good escape route in an emergency.

OP always saw plant ‘hanging’
Speaking to MS News, the OP, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that the overgrown plant is located in an HDB block along Woodlands Drive 14.
The OP, who lives a few blocks away, said he has always seen the overgrown plant.
“It’s always hanging. And we can touch it when we walk past on the 1st floor,” he described.
When asked why he decided to share about the overgrown plant, the OP mentioned that he is a plant lover and always shares gardening-related posts in the Facebook group.
However, the OP pointed out that he spotted more concerning decorations in the area.
“There are also flats with torn and tattered Singapore flags, which is very sad to see,” he claimed.
