48-year-old man to be jailed & caned for 2022 Tuas Checkpoint car crash
On Tuesday (5 March), Singaporean Teo Thiam Leng was sentenced to almost seven years in prison and three strokes of the cane for his involvement in a crash at Tuas Checkpoint.

Teo admitted to consuming methamphetamine or Ice on the day of the accident. He also took the drug multiple times a week in the few years prior.
He received eight charges, including dangerous driving and theft of a motor vehicle.
The court has also denied Teo the ability to hold or obtain all classes of driving licences five years after his time in prison.
Drove while intoxicated before Tuas Checkpoint crash
On 8 April 2022, Malaysia’s Traffic Police chased Teo after he refused to pull over at their request.
Fearful of arrest for driving while intoxicated, he tried to out-drive the police car.
The chase ended at Singapore’s Tuas Checkpoint as Teo crashed the vehicle carrying two other passengers into a barrier, resulting in nearly S$93,000 worth of damages, reported The Straits Times (ST).
Teo did not stop there as he tried to escape by reversing out of the barriers, injuring an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer in the process.

It was found that the two other passengers — 33-year-old Ho Thi My Nhung and 37-year-old Chen Songqi — were knowingly involved in Teo’s plan to sneak across Singapore’s borders.
All three offenders have been charged.
Was on the run from the law
Prior to the incident at Tuas Checkpoint, Teo pleaded guilty to stealing a car in Singapore on 31 Jan 2017.
Months later in Nov 2017, while out on court bail, he hid in the back of a car and fled Singapore. At that point in time, Teo was facing a charge under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Since then, he had been using a fake Singapore passport and driving licence, up until the crash in 2022.
