According to Lianhe Zaobao on Friday (4 Oct), the NEA officers had fined the cabbie $200 for smoking in his car with his windows wound down.
The incident reportedly took place on Thursday (3 Oct) along Mount Elizabeth Road around 12pm.
An NEA representative also stated that the cab driver could have been fined up to $1,000 for smoking in a public service vehicle.
NEA is aware of the photo depicting the man ‘begging for mercy’ circulating around the Internet, and confirmed the incident.
Do not smoke in public service vehicles
According to NEA’s website, there are laws in place to prohibit smoking inside public service vehicles, including taxis, to protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke.
Other public places where smoking is prohibited are:
- Buildings
- Food retail establishments
- Transport nodes
- Public service vehicles
- Sports and recreational facilities.
So, do refrain from smoking in non-smoking areas as well as public service vehicles for the benefit of others.
