Daiso Singapore Will Charge GST From 1 May, Seeks Customers’ Understanding
Daiso is popular among Singaporeans not only due to the wide variety of household products available but also for the flat S$2 price tag for most of their items.
However, this will no longer be the case come 1 May as Daiso outlets in Singapore will be charging GST on their products.
After taking into account the prevailing 7% GST rate, Daiso products once priced at S$2 will cost S$0.14 more.
Daiso Singapore to start charging GST to keep improving quality of products
On Wednesday (13 Apr), Facebook user Ava P Burgh shared a picture showing the “price change notice” displayed at an undisclosed Daiso outlet.
The notice informed customers that though they try to keep prices as affordable as possible, the move is necessary so that the Japanese franchise can keep improving the quality of their products.
From 1 May 2022, Daiso outlets in Singapore will be charging GST on their products.
With the prevailing 7% GST rate, products currently sold for S$2 will soon cost S$2.14.
With the gradual GST hike over the coming years, these are the prices that customers can expect:
- From 1 Jan 2023 (8% GST): S$2.16
- From 1 Jan 2024 (9% GST): S$2.18
The franchise thanked customers for their understanding and hope they’d continue shopping with them despite the imminent price increase.
Netizens largely understanding of move
Though it’s only natural for customers to respond negatively to a price hike, Daiso fans apparently took it quite well and were rather understanding of the move.
This customer said it was a “fair” move, and pointed out that Daiso Singapore had been absorbing GST for over a decade since entering the Singapore market.
Perhaps more importantly, a handful of netizens mourned the ‘loss’ of their favourite “always S$2 store”.
MS News has reached out to Daiso Singapore to verify the information and will update this article accordingly when they get back.
Hope price hike will not stop customers from visiting Daiso
Though it’s only understandable for Singaporeans to feel sian about the move, it’s perhaps a necessary one for Daiso to maintain the quality of their products.
We applaud customers for being understanding of the move and hope they will continue supporting the store despite the price hike.
