Singapore Has 17 Foreign Domestic Helpers Among 10,141 Confirmed Covid-19 Cases
On Wednesday (22 Apr), Singapore exceeded the 10,000th mark for the number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore.
Reportedly, 17 of them are foreign domestic workers who work for Singapore employers.
They are linked mainly to clusters in which their employers are associated with, according to a report by The Straits Times (ST), clarifying fake news on their connection with migrant workers.
Did not get Covid-19 via migrant workers
On 6 Apr, a Singaporean film director, Boo Jun Feng, brought to attention a circulating WhatsApp message, claiming that migrant workers are passing on the virus to local domestic helpers.
He urges people to prevent spreading such unfounded rumours and shared ways in which we can help migrant workers instead.
To prove his point, Singapore currently has 17 confirmed Covid-19 patients who work as helpers — all unrelated to dormitory clusters.
Of these, 4 of them are known to be linked to the Wizlearn Technologies cluster and a health product shop in Lavender as their employers were infected, according to ST.
Helpers will get face masks too
To protect our helpers from Covid-19, the government, alongside Temasek Foundation and several NGOs, are working to distribute face masks to them.
The kit is said to include 2 reusable cloth masks and one surgical mask, according to Channel News Asia (CNA).
As they’re currently giving out masks to migrant workers who are now at greater risks, domestic helpers can expect to receive their kit near late May.
Hope all Covid-19 patients will get well soon
After much discussion and concern over migrant workers allegedly infecting their girlfriends, mostly comprising domestic workers, this piece of information is important to put out.
While the number remains low, we mustn’t let our guard down.
Hopefully, like many Singaporeans, all domestic workers will be equipped with the necessary protective gear. Employers should play their part and take care of them too.
