2016 Chinese New Year Ang Pow Guide – How Much To Give Out This Year

How much should you give?

Chinese New Year is just around the corner — get ready your ang pow packets and be prepared to be cai shen ye in less than two weeks’ time.

If you’re on the receiving end, lucky you!

Anyhow, MustShareNews has come up with a nifty guide to spare you the headache of not knowing how much to give. We’ve also included the amount you should give to your spouse so you don’t have to sleep in the living room.

As a rule of thumb though, avoid dishing out $2 red packets – most find it “embarrassing for the giver”, according to a survey conducted by The Straits Times in 2014.

*Husbands get a special once-a-year big ang pow as a token of appreciation for the monthly maintenance fees and/or V-Day/anniversary treats for their wives.

Feel free to go below the market rate, but don’t say we didn’t warn you – that niece you see once a year will surely remember you as the scrooge.

Just kidding.

After all, CNY is more than just collecting ang pows. Take this festive occasion to reunite with your family and spend ample time with them. Of course, don’t forget to gorge yourself with pineapple tarts and other unusual snacks!

Here’s wishing everyone a very happy Chinese New Year in advance!
