Hat Yai hospital suffers flooding and blackout, medical staff continue to care for newborns in darkness
Despite the catastrophic flooding that has crippled southern Thailand, medical staff at Hat Yai Hospital are continuing to care for newborns in pitch darkness, with the hospital experiencing a blackout while water levels rise rapidly across the region.
Staff go above and beyond to care for newborns
In a post that has gone viral, Ms Fasiyah Fatonni shared a touching photo of hospital staff sitting in the dark in the newborn unit, doing their best to care for the babies despite the challenging circumstances.
The post, which has garnered over 95,000 likes on Facebook, reassured parents that their children were in good hands.
“You don’t have to worry,” she wrote, “We’ll take care of them to the best of our abilities.”
She went on to praise the resilience of both the babies and the staff, noting that the newborns had been incredibly patient throughout the crisis, with none throwing tantrums.
Support floods in as hospital battles blackout
In addition to the photo, Ms Fatonni also shared a video showing the level of darkness inside the unit, with the staff relying on flashlights to navigate.

The post quickly garnered thousands of comments, with nearly 4,000 well-wishing messages flooding in, expressing gratitude for the staff’s dedication and hope that the situation would be resolved soon.
Catastrophic flooding hits Hat Yai, forcing mass evacuations
The severe flooding in Hat Yai began after heavy rainfall, with water levels rising far beyond expected levels.
According to the Bangkok Post, authorities in Songkhla province issued an evacuation order for Hat Yai on Monday (24 Nov), affecting nearly 720,000 households.

While the evacuation order was issued, many residents found themselves stranded, with no way to leave due to rising water levels and blocked roads.
The local government has faced criticism online for its preparedness in handling the disaster.
As of Monday, Hat Yai Hospital’s facilities remain flooded, with water levels rising to the point where trucks are submerged up to their wheels.
The hospital has recommended that patients use telemedicine services as an alternative during the ongoing crisis.
