Amid the heavy downpour on Friday (22 Nov), at least two cars got stuck in a flooded road in Woodlands.

Both their drivers said they got stuck after misjudging the water level on the road.

Cars seen waiting to proceed as road in Woodlands is flooded

At about 3pm on Friday, a security guard told Shin Min Daily News that the cars had become stuck along Woodlands Avenue 10.

A video posted on TikTok showed a long stretch of the road flooded, turning the road into a “river”.

A number of cars can be seen stationary with their hazard lights on to one side of the road, apparently waiting for the flood to clear before proceeding, while some large vehicles decided to brave the waters anyway.

However, one unfortunate car was seen half-submerged, with the water up to its door handles.

Cars entered flooded road in Woodlands as they misjudged water level

The floodwaters receded at the deluge gradually lessened at about 4pm, according to Shin Min reporters at the scene.

But two cars remained on the road — a white BMW and a silver Honda.

The BMW driver, a 74-year-old self-employed woman named only as Ms Lin (transliterated from Mandarin) said she entered the flooded portion of the road as visibility was low due to the rain, so she misjudged the water level.

When she saw that her car was surrounded by water, she didn’t dare to open the door, so she had no choice but to wait for the water to subside.

The Honda driver said he saw that the vehicle in front of him had entered the flooded road and mistakenly believed that the water level wasn’t that high.

But his car “died” halfway through, rendering him also stuck.

Three lanes of Woodlands Ave 10 affected

Three lanes of Woodlands Avenue 10 were affected by the flood, according to Shin Min’s observations.

The stretch of road heading towards Admiralty Road West was completely blocked by water, with motorists only able to proceed by turning left into Woodlands Avenue 9.

After the floodwaters receded, fallen tree branches and leaves were left behind on the road.

Officers from the Traffic Police and national water agency PUB were spotted at the scene assisting motorists.

PUB said it issued flood risk warnings for 19 locations across the island on Friday, with flash floods occurring in Yishun and Potong Pasir.

The heaviest rainfall recorded that day was 127.7mm in northern Singapore over less than three hours — from 2.15pm to 4.50pm.
