Warm & less wet weather expected in 2nd half of Oct, with little rainfall on a few days

Less wet weather in 2nd half of Oct will result in below-average rainfall: MSS

Compared with the first half of this month, the second half of October will be warm and less wet.

That’s according to a weather advisory released by the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) on Wednesday (16 Oct).

Thundery showers on some days

On some days, thundery showers of short duration may still be expected over parts of the island.

These will occur in the late morning and afternoon, MSS said.

During the pre-dawn hours and morning on a few days, Singapore may also experience widespread thundery showers and gusty winds.

These will be brought about by Sumatra squalls — a weather phenomenon brought about by the difference in temperature between land and sea.

Inter-monsoon conditions for the rest of the month

Inter-monsoon conditions, where prevailing winds are mostly light and variable in direction, should continue for the rest of the month, MSS said.

The inter-monsoon period is also characterised by strong land heating in the daytime, which leads to localised and intense thunderstorms and higher-than-usual lightning activity.

The winds will blow from the southeast or southwest on some days.

Less wet weather particularly in last week of Oct

However, the last week of October, in particular, will have less rainfall, MSS said.

In fact, there may be a few days with “little rainfall”, it added.

Thus, the total rainfall for the second fortnight of October is forecast to be “below average over most parts of the island”.

High of 35°C on some days in Oct amid less wet weather

Accordingly, daily maximum temperatures are expected to range from 33°C to 34°C on most days.

On a few days, though, the temperature might hit a high of 35°C.

Above-average rainfall for first half of Oct

In the first half of the month, most parts of Singapore recorded above-average rainfall.

Thundery showers fell in the late morning and afternoon on most days.

Kent Ridge had 137% above-average rainfall over the fortnight, while Paya Lebar was the driest location, recording 8% below-average rainfall.

Intense thundery showers fell on 14 Oct

The highest rainfall registered during the period was in Kent Ridge on 14 Oct, when a daily total rainfall of 145.8mm was recorded.

On that day, intense thundery showers fell over Singapore due to a regional convergence of winds.

National water agency PUB said on Facebook that 134.8mm of rain was recorded in western Singapore from 8.15am to 1.50pm on 14 Oct, adding:

This amount corresponds to 80% of Singapore’s average monthly rainfall in October, and lies within the top 1% of maximum daily rainfall records since 1978.

Temperatures below 34°C on most days

Daily maximum temperatures dropped below 34°C on most days.

Admiralty recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of the fortnight, with the mercury recording 34.1°C on 3 Oct.
