2 teenagers arrested in connection with death of Singaporean student in Brussels
A 25-year-old Singaporean student was fatally stabbed in the early hours of Thursday (7 Nov) in Brussels, Belgium, local media reported.
The incident took place around 2.30am on Rue Saint-Pierre, according to a statement from the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Officers quickly arrived at the scene, where they found the victim with a severe abdominal stab wound.
Emergency personnel administered first aid on-site before transporting the student to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Two 18-year-old suspects, both reportedly students, have since been arrested in connection with the attack.
Argument escalates into fatal stabbing
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Singaporean student, who was studying in Belgium, was initially approached by the two suspects.
An argument then ensued and escalated, resulting in the fatal stabbing.
Sources claimed that the victim was with two other students earlier in the evening when they were allegedly harassed by the suspects for unknown reasons.
The students later headed to Rue Saint-Pierre, where the victim, now alone, was confronted by the suspects once again.
One of them reportedly drew a knife, fatally wounding the student.
Following the incident, authorities identified the suspects and conducted searches at their residences that morning before taking them into custody.
The scene of the crime was examined by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, along with an investigating judge, a forensic doctor, and the Federal Judicial Police, as reported by The Brussels Times.
With the investigation still underway, the Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that “the exact circumstances of the events have yet to be clarified,” and no further information will be released at this time.
In response to MS News‘ queries, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson said the Singapore Embassy in Brussels is providing consular assistance to the family of the deceased Singaporean.
The Embassy is also in contact with local authorities.
