They may look harmless at first glance, but if you have relatives or friends eating them on a regular basis, you should probably warn them against it.

On Tuesday (11 Dec), the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) released a statement claiming that sky fruits may be responsible for causing liver injuries to 7 consumers in Singapore.

What are sky fruits?

Sky fruits – aka mahogany seeds – are derived from the mahogany plant.

They also go by the names “buah tunjuk langit” in Malay, and “xiang tian guo” in Chinese.

Consumed both raw and in capsule form, sky fruits are rumored to help control blood sugar levels as well as high blood pressure.

Sky fruits supplements can be found online for roughly $30/bottle on LifePlus. An alternative listing on Lazada has since been taken down.

Despite its popularity, there have been no clinical studies supporting the seeds’ effectiveness or safety.

Extent of liver damage varies

7 people over 3 years have reportedly suffered liver injuries after consuming these seeds, claims HSA.

The extent of injuries vary, ranging from “mild liver function impairment” to liver failure.

One individual also suffered kidney injuries while another was afflicted with multiple joint aches and pain. However, most affected by the fruits had pre-existing conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Thankfully, the affected patients have recovered or are currently recovering from their injuries.

Look out for symptoms

See a doctor ASAP if any of these symptoms surface after consuming sky fruits.

  • Nausea
  • Lethargy
  • Dark urine

Now that you know about the dangers of eating sky fruits, do keep a lookout for it in your family and friends’ supplements.
