Mother-to-be in China realises she’s pregnant with nine babies after third checkup
An expectant mother in China who was having difficulty conceiving was surprised to find out she was pregnant with nine babies after taking ovulation-inducing drugs.
According to reports from Guangzhou Daily, Ms Hou from Nanchang, China was having difficulty conceiving after getting married for a year. A medical check-up showed that this was due to multiple cysts and endometrial polyps in her uterus.
Hence, her doctor recommended an injection to induce ovulation and increase her chances of getting pregnant.
The procedure was carried out in early October and by the end of October, she was reportedly pregnant.
“At that time, I was very happy to learn that I was pregnant,” Ms Hou said after a medical check-up revealed that she was pregnant with triplets.
“My dream of becoming a mother had come true.”
A surprise met with mixed feelings
To Ms Hou’s surprise on 5 Nov, a routine checkup revealed that there were eight gestational sacs in her uterus, meaning she was going to have eight babies instead.
This new development gave her mixed feelings. At the time, she was experiencing nausea and loss of appetite, likely due to pregnancy.
By Nov 12, another routine checkup showed that there were not eight but nine gestational sacs in her uterus, meaning she was instead going to be a mother of nine babies.
Mr Hu, Ms Hou’s husband, said that this development made him nervous as he was concerned about whether or not his wife’s body would be able to cope with nine babies growing inside her.
“After the checkup, we are awaiting suggestions from the doctor on how best to proceed with the pregnancy,” he added.
Rarity for four babies or more through natural conception
Medical experts feel that it is extremely rare to have more than four babies through natural conception.
For example, the odds of having twins are 2% to 4% of all births worldwide while the odds of having triplets are 1:10000.
