Night Guard Suffered 2 Strokes & 8 Major Falls In The Past
To continue making a living after suffering 2 strokes and a series of major falls isn’t easy. But one infirm Uncle Din managed, against the odds, to do just that — picking up a job as a night guard at United Square Shopping Mall.
His circumstance was brought to light in a Facebook post by Grab driver Melvin Poh.
Uncle Din takes taxi home to prevent falls
Mr Poh had received a call to pick up a passenger at United Square at about 3.20am early this morning (29 May). Upon his arrival, he saw his passenger, Uncle Din, tottering towards the car with the aid of his walking stick.
During the car ride, Mr Poh learnt that Uncle Din had suffered 2 strokes and 8 major falls in the past. He had been jobless for 8 years and was certified “permanently disabled”.
But determined as the elderly man was, he regained his strength to walk and write, and eventually landed a job as a night guard.
Uncle Din earns $65 a day. That small sum is squeezed even further because Uncle Din, owing to his condition, has to take a taxi home every night. The company apparently does not allow him to claim transport fares.
Night-time fares are not cheap, and the taxi rides take up about half of Uncle Din’s salary.
Offers to send Uncle Din home daily
After hearing his story, Mr Poh offered to pick Uncle Din from work everyday for just $10. This will help him save on transport expenses.
Unfortunately, Mr Poh won’t be free every night to do so. He is therefore appealing to drivers to stand in for him when he isn’t free and give Uncle Din a lift.
Donations went to Uncle Din’s fare
An update on the post showed that Mr Poh has since received a number of donations from the public. He explained that while he appreciates the gesture, what is more important is to find drivers to help Uncle Din out.
As for the donations that have already come in, Mr Poh will be using them to cover Uncle Din’s cab fares.
