Palestinian flags displayed in apartments in Malaysia during independence day
A recent post on X has caused a stir among Malaysian netizens during the country’s Independednce Day.
The post, which was uploaded on 30 Aug by X user @devprasad888, shows a photo of a high-rise apartment building displaying Palestinian flags alongside the Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian National Flag) during Independence Day in Malaysia
“I’m a born and bred Malaysian and I love my Negaraku, Jalur Gemilang and everything Malaysian,” the caption said.
” I’m not at all cool with another country’s flag being raised for OUR Merdeka alongside Our Jalur Gemilang!”

The post has since gone viral, garnering nearly 3 million views and almost 1 thousand comments at the time of writing.
Mixed feelings among netizens
Malaysia, and the majority of its citizens, have not been silent about their unwavering support of Palestine amidst its conflict with Israel.
However, not all netizens agree that that Palestinian flags should be displayed alongside the country’s flags so blatantly, especially on its Independence Day.
One X user, who is a vocal supporter of Palestine, replied to the X post: “We don’t have to display the Palestinian flags at all events to show our support. For Malaysia’s Independence Day, we should just stick to displaying the Malaysian flag.”

However, many netizens criticised the OP for posting the image and accused them of being an Israeli supporter, pulling up screenshots where the OP had allegedly expressed their disdain towards Palestine.
Multiple users also felt that there was ‘nothing wrong’ with displaying the Palestine flag, as it serves as a reminder of the hardship the Palestinian civilians are going through.
A recent TikTok video was later posted featuring the same image, with a caption saying, “Which is the country that is celebrating its independence?”
It is noted that under the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949, the display of foreign flags is illegal in Malaysia.
Palestinian tifo raised during Malaysia’s national anthem
A similar incident, which happened a few days ago, had also sparked controversy among Malaysians.
A Palestinian tifo was raised during Malaysia’s national anthem before the start of the prestigious FA Cup final football match in Selangor.

The incident raised multiple eyebrows among Malaysians. Although many agreed with the sentiment of the tifo, most concur that a Malaysian flag should be raised during the national anthem instead.
