Cyclist flips driver off while beating red light at Thomson Road junction

Cyclist flips driver off along Thomson Road on 16 Sept

On Monday (16 Sept) morning, two individuals — riding a scooter and bicycle — were almost run over when they beat the red light at a junction along Thomson Road.

Thankfully, oncoming vehicles managed to brake in time, preventing an accident.

However, the male cyclist ended up flipping the driver off with his middle finger.

A video showing the incident was shared on the Complaint Singapore Facebook group on Thursday (19 Sept).

Cyclist and scooter rider ride across junction

The incident happened as the dashcam vehicle was moving off after the traffic light turned green.

As the cars started lurching forward, a male cyclist and female scooter user approached the junction from the vehicle’s 11 o’clock direction.

The pair rode off the pavement just as the light turned green for the vehicles, cutting diagonally across all three lanes.

The female scooter user can be seen turning her head towards the cars while crossing, clearly aware of the oncoming traffic.

To avoid running into the pair, the dashcam vehicle braked hard and nearly came to a complete stop.

From the corner of the video, the car in the middle lane can also be seen applying its emergency brakes as well.

As the cyclist reached the middle section of the road, he seemingly raised his middle finger and pointed it in the direction of the dashcam vehicle.

It’s unclear from the muted video if the dashcam driver had sounded its horn.

According to the Facebook post, the driver submitted the dashcam footage to the traffic police.

Outraged at cyclist’s rudeness

Replies to the video uniformly slam the riders for their rude behaviour.

Some were in disbelief about the cyclist’s vulgar hand sign despite him violating traffic rules.

Others point out the difficulty of factoring cyclists into consideration while driving.
