Two-metre-long monitor lizard photographed eating python headfirst under Clementi Road

A cyclist was treated to a striking scene of wildlife in action at the Ulu Pandan Park Connector recently, spotting a large monitor lizard consuming a python beneath Clementi Road.

The large lizard, estimated to be about two metres long, drew widespread attention online after photos of the encounter were shared on Facebook.

Two ‘giant’ monitor lizards spotted

According to the photographer, who asked to remain anonymous, the sighting occurred at around 8.30am on Saturday (7 Feb) while they were cycling along the park connector.

They told MS News that they noticed two “giant” monitor lizards under Clementi Road.

One of them was feeding on a snake, which appeared to have already died.

Photos taken at the scene showed the monitor lizard lying flat on the python’s body and consuming it headfirst.

“The monitor lizard is around two metres long. It seems the snake was around the same size,” the photographer estimated.

Wildlife enthusiasts call it nature at work

After snapping two photos, the cyclist continued on their way and later posted the images in the Singapore Wildlife Sightings Facebook group that evening.

The post has garnered more than 400 likes at press time, with one netizen identifying the prey as a juvenile python.

According to NParks, monitor lizards feed on a variety of animals, including insects, crabs, fish, and snakes, and are also known to scavenge on carrion.

They have previously been observed preying on pythons in Singapore.
