FIFA’s TikTok account amuses netizens by using Singlish in caption
On 13 Oct, the official TikTok account of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) stunned local netizens by captioning a video with Singlish words.
The TikTok video displayed highlights of world-famous footballers attempting the step over — a trick in football used to bypass opponents.
@fifaworldcup Sibeh zai until opponents all blur. One moment see ball, next moment kena trick, don’t know where the ball go liao. 🦑⚽️ #FIFAWorldCup
“Sibei zai until opponents all blur,” the caption reads, referring to the proficient footballers’ skill to trick their opponents.
One moment see ball, next moment kena trick, don’t know where the ball go liao.
The caption also cleverly included a squid emoji — a reference to the Singlish phrase: “blur like sotong”.
Local netizens amused by FIFA’s Singlish caption
Numerous netizens swarmed the comment section to express their amazement — and confusion — that the world-renowned football association knew phrases unique to Singapore.
This led many to wonder if the admin of the account is also Singaporean.
One netizen also joked that the football association should post football void deck highlights in the future.
Singlish TikTok by FIFA is a geo-post
As some netizens pointed out, the TikTok video is an example of geo-posting.
Geo-posting is a method that content creators use to strategically tailor their messages to specific geographic areas. This way, they are able to attract a wide range of audiences by providing localised content that resonates on a personal level.
Unfortunately, this also means that the Singlish TikTok video uploaded by FIFA will not appear on the feed of other users worldwide.
It is targeted towards Singapore residents and hence, will only appear on the feed of those in Singapore.
