Driver Hits 7 Cars & 1 Police Vehicle In Bukit Batok Getaway Attempt
Car chase scenes might be common in our favourite thrillers, but it’s not often that we see them in real life.
On Monday (28 Dec), a car was seen getting away from the police Grand Theft Auto (GTA) style at Bukit Batok in the wee hours of the morning.
After an islandwide search, the driver was later arrested in a Jurong HDB flat.
According to Channel NewsAsia (CNA), the 26-year-old is a suspect in a case of rash act causing hurt, as well as for drug-related offences.
Man tries to escape in getaway car at Bukit Batok
On Monday (28 Dec) at 4am, the police attempted to arrest the man at an open-air carpark at Bukit Batok Street 33.
However, the man was uncooperative and tried to flee in his car, reported CNA.
In a video by SG Road Vigilante SGRV, the man is seen reversing a silver car at an extremely fast speed.
At this point, his bumper seems to have already taken a few hard hits, precariously hanging on as he drives.
He then narrowly makes it through a small gap between a police car and a kerb, bumping into another car along the way. The impact cleanly tears the bumper off the silver car.
The vehicle then rams straight into a parked car behind it.
The driver proceeds to make a speedy escape from the carpark, leaving only the fallen bumper in its wake.
In total, the driver hit 7 parked cars and 1 police vehicle, reported CNA.
2 police officers were also injured in the process. They were later taken to Ng Teng Fong hospital for treatment and were shortly discharged, reported Lianhe Zaobao.
Police arrest man at Jurong East HDB
Following the 26-year-old man’s escape, the police launched an islandwide search.
About an hour later at 5.10am, the silver getaway car was found at Block 257, Jurong East Street 24.
Using images from police cameras, the police located the man at a residential unit in the block.
According to CNA, he was promptly arrested in the flat.
Faces up to 1 year jail
CNA states that the 26-year-old is wanted by the police for absconding from bail.
He is apparently also involved in a case of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon as well as driving while under disqualification.
In addition, he is wanted by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for drug consumption and not reporting for a urine test.
He will be charged in court on Wednesday (30 Dec) with 2 counts of rash act causing hurt, reported CNA.
If found guilty, he may face up to 1 year in jail, or a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
Both the police and CNB are currently investigating the case.
Kudos to the police
Kudos to the police for their swift actions and efforts in locating the runaway man, despite the challenging circumstances.
Hopefully, this serves as a lesson for all to be cooperative with law enforcement.
If there’s anything this incident proves, it’s that you can run, but you certainly can’t hide from them.
