Car catches fire inside KPE tunnel, extinguished by tunnel water sprinkler

A car fire broke out inside a Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) tunnel after the Bartley Road East exit.

The incident occurred on 2 Nov at around 9pm.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told MS News that the fire involved the car’s engine compartment.

Before the SCDF arrived, the tunnel’s water mist system extinguished the fire without any reported injuries.

A video on Facebook showed two lanes in the tunnel blocked off, with the fire alarm ringing loudly.

A wall of mist also surrounded the area where the fire took place. Vehicles could be seen driving slowly through the sole open lane on the right.

Water mist causes visibility drop

An SG Road Vigilante video also showed the same area, with the mist cloud dropping visibility to near zero when driven through.

In the video, the camcar’s windshield wipers worked frantically to get rid of the water on the glass.

The video’s second clip showed the aftermath of the incident after the mist cloud had cleared up. Various SCDF personnel could be seen walking around the wet road at the scene.

“Oh, it’s the car caught fire,” the driver said upon spotting a car on the road shoulder.

Furthermore, the KPE tunnel’s FM radio was activated, warning drivers of the accident site ahead of them.

The SCDF told MS News that no injuries had been reported from the fire. Investigations into the cause are currently ongoing.

One netizen said the post served as a warning that the water mist system dropped visibility drastically. They warned about potential crashes due to it.
