Lucky Plaza fire extinguished by members of the public using buckets of water
Two people were sent to hospital after a fire broke out on the sixth floor of Lucky Plaza.
The incident took place on Sunday (20 Oct), which typically sees the mall packed with domestic helpers on their day off.
SCDF firefighters & ambulance seen outside mall
A video posted on Facebook by user Mhae Moliyok that morning showed several Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) firefighters outside the building.
An ambulance was also seen parked in the driveway and the fire alarm could be heard.
Two firefighters entered the building, which was apparently still packed with people inside and outside.
Sixth floor of Lucky Plaza filled with smoke due to fire
Another Facebook user, Jane Z Hwee Mei, posted at 10am that she was greeted by “a plume of smoke and burnt smell” when she entered Lucky Plaza.
She saw firefighters making their way to the sixth floor, the same floor she was headed.
The user, who was getting her hair done, was initially told by the hairstylist that there was no need to evacuate.
However, a firefighter later told them to evacuate the sixth floor, she said.
In a photo she shared, police officers and SCDF firefighters can be seen attending to an incident on the smoke-filled sixth floor.
Lucky Plaza fire involved contents of charcoal stove on sixth floor
In response to queries from MS News, the SCDF said it was alerted to a fire at about 9.45am on Sunday (20 Oct).
It was at 304 Orchard Road — the address of Lucky Plaza.
The blaze involved the contents of a charcoal stove inside a unit on the sixth floor.
It was extinguished by members of the public using buckets of water before the SCDF arrived.
Two conveyed to hospital
Two individuals were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital as a result of the fire, SCDF said.
About 20 other people had self-evacuated before the SCDF arrived.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, it added.
