Video of pigeon ‘culling’ operation outside Joo Chiat complex goes viral

A video allegedly showing pigeon “culling” efforts in Joo Chiat has gone viral on social media.

Based on the surroundings, the incident took place outside Joo Chiat Complex. While the video was posted on 16 Oct, it’s unclear when the operation occurred.

The clip starts off showing a flock of pigeons feasting on what appears to be some form of feed scattered on the ground.

There were easily 20 to 30 pigeons going by the size of the flock.

About 15 seconds into the video, a device planted next to the flock suddenly shoots out a yellow net in the birds’ direction.

The sudden movement of the net startles the flock into taking flight. However, the net prevented the birds from escaping.

Two men then stepped forward, seemingly to hold the net down.

NParks alerted to ‘dis-amenities’ caused by pigeons in Joo Chiat

In response to queries from MS News, Group Director, Wildlife Management at the National Parks Board (NParks) Mr How Choon Beng said the agency received reports about “dis-amenities” caused by pigeons in the Joo Chiat estate.

Mr How did not disclose the nature and number of reports received, but said they came in over the past year.

NParks has since carried out “population management measures”.

In particular, the agency is “removing some pigeons from hotspots with observably large clusters of pigeons”.

Mr How also shared that rock pigeons are non-native to Singapore and may contribute to soiling and hygiene issues.

To help reduce the pigeon population growth, members of the public are reminded not to feed them and to ensure food scraps are properly disposed of.
