Bangladeshi man attempts to bribe ICA officers for entry into S’pore

A Bangladeshi man was sentenced to one month in jail following his attempt to bribe two Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers to let him enter Singapore.

Upon arriving in the country on 2 Oct, 30-year-old Rakibul was stopped from entering Singapore at the automated lanes at Changi Airport Terminal 2.

He was escorted to the ICA duty officer’s room for further inspection, after which ICA Checkpoint Inspector (INSP) Muhammad Firdaus Ahmad took him to a waiting room, reported Channel NewsAsia (CNA).

En route, Rakibul slipped a piece of paper to INSP Firdaus, saying: “I give you S$200 inside the passport. Let me go to visit Singapore please.”

Rakibul was then questioned by Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Wong Wei Quan regarding the note.

While trying to determine Rakibul’s intentions behind the note, ASP Wong was offered S$200 in cash from Rakibul.

Jailed for 1 month following his actions

The two ICA officers refused the bribe and reported the incident to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).

Rakibul faced corruption charges in court the following day.

On Friday (18 Oct), he was sentenced to a month in jail for his crime.

“Singapore adopts a strict zero-tolerance approach towards corruption,” CPIB noted.

Those found guilty of corruption under Section 6 of the Prevention of Corruption Act can face a fine of up to S$100,000, a jail sentence of up to five years, or both.
