Elderly woman in Japan scolds pregnant lady for using priority seat on bus
An elderly woman in Japan scolded a pregnant lady after she sat on the priority seat on a bus while heading to work.
The incident had left the younger woman shaken, to the point that she no longer wanted to work.
She aired her frustrations on X earlier this week, saying that she was told to get up from her seat despite being seven-months pregnant and feeling ill.
‘Young person, stand up,’ says elderly woman
According to her, the elderly woman shouted at her, telling her to get up. “It’s not right for a young person like you to be sitting here!” said the older woman.
The younger lady then explained that she was pregnant and showed her maternity badge, which some women carry on board public transport in Japan.
However, she said that the elderly woman continued to chide her regardless.

Overwhelmed by the situation, the pregnant lady said she began to cry.
In an interview with Japan media outlet Hint-Pot, the woman said she had been feeling dizzy because of morning sickness.
As a result, she chose to sit at the priority seating near the front of the bus to avoid the worst of the rockiness.
Commuter and bus driver takes her side
Thankfully, others on the bus who witnessed the exchange came to her aid.
Another elderly commuter, as well as the bus driver, assured the pregnant lady that she should remain seated.
Despite being yelled at, the pregnant woman said she understood why the old lady had yelled at her.
Although saddened by the lack of apology, she said the woman had probably been speaking up on behalf of people like her.
Since getting pregnant, the woman also observed that few people have given up their seats for her on public transport.
People are often too engrossed in their smartphones, she said.
However, she noted that she did not seek preferential treatment and only hoped for a more considerate society.
“I hope that we can create a society where those who need a seat can sit comfortably, and where consideration and compromise are the norm,” she said.
