Singapore tuition centre gives out branded handbags to long-time patrons
Chinese Language Centre, a tuition centre in Singapore specialising in Chinese language education, has sparked discussion with its unconventional way of thanking loyal patrons — by gifting them branded Coach handbags.
Located at the NEWest mall on West Coast Drive, the centre launched the initiative to show appreciation for parents whose children have been enrolled since its opening in 2020, according to Lianhe Zaobao.
A notice displayed outside the centre reads:
If your same child has been studying in our centre for four years, please contact Mr [redacted]. You will get a brand-name COACH bag.
A check on the official Coach Singapore website reveals that handbags typically range in price from S$475 to S$1,600.
However, it remains unclear which specific model of the American fashion brand will be given to qualifying parents.
Giving back to parents for their unwavering support
When asked about the unconventional gift, Mr Zhang, the lead behind the initiative, explained that it was a gesture of appreciation for the parents’ support since the tuition centre was founded.
However, he did not reveal further details about the handbag giveaway, such as how many parents qualify or the total cost of the initiative to the centre.
Unsurprisingly, many parents expressed excitement over the lavish gift.
Still, some raised concerns about the marketing strategy. They worried that such rewards could lead to a surge in enrolments, potentially stretching teaching resources thin.
“The main reason I chose this centre is because I believe the teaching quality is excellent,” said parent Yang Zhiting (transliterated from Mandarin). “The class sizes are small, allowing teachers to focus on each student.”
“This feels more like a promotional tactic, so I don’t plan to claim the bag.”
