Father in Malaysia quits smoking to donate his kidney to son
61-year-old Ayub Abdul Ghani was a smoker for 40 years until he decided to donate his kidney to his son, who suffered from Stage 5 kidney failure.
His son, Mohamad Zulkifli, a 27-year-old doctor at a hospital in Kelantan, was diagnosed in 2020 after experiencing persistent vomiting and dizziness.
“Since then, I’ve had to undergo peritoneal dialysis four times a day, all while completing university and transitioning into my career,” said Dr Zulkifli to Malaysia media outlet WeirdKaya.
Father gradually quit smoking
To help his son, Mr Ayub gradually lessened his smoking before quitting entirely three months before the surgery.
His efforts for his son paid off and the surgery, performed earlier this week at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, was a success.
Mr Ayub said he was not nervous at all about the procedure, thinking it would be the best for his son.
Heartwarming story touches netizens
Dr Zulkifli had first shared the story on TikTok where it touched the hearts of many netizens.
One commenter shared that they had the same experience but with their brother.
“He is my donor and he gave up smoking to be my donor for kidney transplant,” shared the netizen.
Meanwhile, another TikTok user expressed their gratitude to their father who had “immediately stopped smoking” after they expressed their wishes to spend more time with him.
Many others left their well wishes for Dr Zulfikli and his father.
