A young girl fell to her death from the fourth floor of a shopping mall in Shandong, China.
She was leaning on the handrail of an escalator next to a glass panel when the automated stairway pulled her downwards and caused her to fall.
According to Chinese media reports, the incident occurred at about 8.30pm on Saturday (16 Nov).
Woman ‘pulled down’ by escalator
A video circulating online showed the girl standing at a corner where the glass panel met an escalator.
Notably, the small glass panel was detached from the rest of the guardrail and seemingly had no supporting structure.
The girl leant on the escalator’s handrail, which pulled her down and caused her to lose balance.
The small glass panel behind her subsequently broke from the force, ultimately causing her to fall.
The girl tried holding the escalator’s handrail but didn’t manage to get a firm grip.
Other pictures showed the girl lying at the mall’s atrium in a pool of blood and surrounded by broken glass.
According to a witness, one of the girl’s parent was also at the scene and collapsed following the incident.
The girl was about 14 years -old, reports Sina News.
Mall had just opened earlier this month
The girl was rushed to the hospital but eventually died.
A witness stated that despite the mall being one kilometre away from the hospital, the ambulance took over 10 minutes to arrive due to a traffic jam.
He also noted that the mall was crowded as it had recently opened.
The police said the cause of the fall is still under investigation and that an official announcement will be issued in due time.
Meanwhile, the mall reportedly resumed operations the following day with the site of the incident cordoned off.
