God Of Fortune Becomes A Meme In Thailand
Many Singaporeans pray to the Chinese God of Fortune (财神) for wealth, prosperity, and good fortune.
Recently, the deity became a sensation in Thailand, and not because of the celestial power that he possesses, but the celebrity influence of a prominent K-Pop star.

God of Fortune allegedly blessed Twitter user with “much personal wealth”
It all started when fans of Blackpink star ‘Lisa’ discovered a dated photo of her holding her phone with the God of Fortune as her screensaver. Xiao Zhan (肖战), a Chinese actor, was also seen with his phone’s home screen having a similar background.
One fan who goes by the Twitter handle @honey_beigr decided to follow suit and change her wallpaper to a picture of the Fortune God.
On 21 Oct, the Twitter user posted a tweet, claiming that she had gained “much personal wealth” after doing so.
According to Thai website Khaosod, the user also claimed that “money has really been flowing in” and this means she is no longer “a poor freelancer who slaps mosquitoes while waiting for assignments”.
Her viral tweet has been retweeted nearly 14,000 times at the time of writing.
Since then, Thai social media users and business owners have changed their display pictures and phone backgrounds to pictures of the deity, in a bid to ‘welcome prosperity’ into their lives.
God of Fortune turns into a meme in Thailand
The God of Fortune has also been meme-d by individuals and companies in Thailand.
One supermarket chain decided to include the deity in a soy sauce advertisement.
Another BBQ restaurant straight out substituted a scroll he was holding with what seems like a basket of meat and vegetables.
Someone even photoshopped Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan’s face over the deity’s face.
K-Pop stars have huge influence worldwide
While we can’t ascertain if the God of Fortune really brought wealth to those who are now using it for their wallpapers, this is surely a sign of the insane influence that K-Pop stars have.
MS News wishes all its readers good fortune and prosperity, regardless of display pictures and wallpapers.
