Plane in Indonesia spews fire from engine while on tarmac
On Tuesday (5 Nov), a Trigana Air plane in Indonesia carrying 121 passengers started spewing fire from its engine, causing panic among those onboard.
The incident unfolded when the aircraft, a Boeing 737-500, was preparing to depart from Sentani Airport in the Papua province for Wamena in Highland Papua.
According to Antara News, it occurred at around 11.21am local time.
4 plane passengers injured in hasty evacuation
Footage of the incident, which was posted on social media platform X, showed that the flames ceased after a few seconds.
Another video showed passengers using the escape slide to evacuate onto the tarmac, while others stood on the plane’s wing.
As a result of the chaos, four individuals sustained minor injuries while attempting to disembark the plane. One of the passengers reportedly suffered from sprained limbs.
“There are no fatalities in the incident, but some passengers were injured,” said Surya Eka, a spokesperson from Sentani Airport.
He added that the injuries happened when passengers rushed to exit the plane through the emergency doors.
According to reports, a passenger had suddenly opened the emergency door after seeing the flames — however, authorities have yet to identify the individual.
All 121 passengers were safely evacuated, but the flight was cancelled after the fire and the emergency evacuation.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Committee.
