Ang Mo Kio Mosque Identified As New Covid-19 Cluster, 3 Cases Linked To Date

Latest Covid-19 Patient Visited Masjid Al-Muttaqin For Friday Prayers

On Wednesday (18 Mar), the Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 47 new Covid-19 cases — the largest single-day increase to date.

While many might be concerned by the large number alone, a new cluster appears to have emerged too.

To date, 3 Covid-19 cases have been linked to Masjid Al-Muttaqin, a mosque along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 — the newest cluster identified by MOH.

Masjid Al-Muttaqin disinfected last Thursday

The 3 cases currently linked to the cluster are,

  • Case 183
  • Case 252
  • Case 310

According to Lianhe Zaobao, Case 183 – a 29-year-old Singaporean man – works at the Ang Mo Kio mosque and had visited a religious gathering in Kuala Lumpur.

The mosque staff reportedly had contact with Case 252 and Case 310, announced over the past days involving 2 Singaporeans men aged 66 and 58 years old respectively.

Case 310 apparently attended a Friday prayers session at Masjid Al-Muttaqin on 6 Mar, according to a Facebook notice by the mosque. He was likely infected then.

In the same notice, the mosque said they’re working closely with MOH for contact tracing purposes.

It has also undergone deep cleaning and disinfecting last Thursday (12 Mar)

Folks at the mosque also urged congregants to monitor their health closely and seek medical treatment should they show any symptoms that might suggest Covid-19.

Masjid Al-Muttaqin is the 4th place of worship identified as a Covid-19 cluster in Singapore. Previous ones include:

  • The Life Church and Missions Singapore
  • Grace Assembly of God
  • Church of Singapore (Bukit Timah).

Heartened by mosque measures to prevent further spread of virus

While it’s unfortunate for the mosque to emerge as a new Covid-19 cluster, we’re heartened by the measures put in place by the mosque to prevent any further spread of the virus.

We hope they will prove effective and that authorities will be able to identify potential patients so as to quickly ring-fence the infection.
