MINDEF Says NSFs & NSmen To Get More Allowance From Mar 2020 To Acknowledge Their Contributions
Good news for all Singaporean Sons — Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) announced on Monday (2 March) an increase in monthly allowance.
All full-time National Servicemen (NSFs) and those who are operationally ready (NSmen) receive a monthly allowance from MINDEF.
Basically, they can expect to receive between $70-$120 more a month, starting 1 Mar, according to Channel NewsAsia (CNA).
Both rank & vocation allowances to increase
Under the new arrangement, both rank and vocation allowances will see an increase.
For example, a naval diver holding a Corporal rank used to get $930 a month. Now, they can receive $1,050.
The vocation allowance will replace what used to be the combat allowance, which was given to infantry, guards and armour servicemen.
This combined with increased rank allowance will give servicemen at least $70 more at the end of the month.
Allowances are not salaries
It’s great news that servicemen will receive more allowance, because they give up their time defending our nation.
However, the amount that Singaporean Sons receive while in mandatory service is still not a lot compared to a job either in the private sector or a regular serviceman.
This has always posed problems for those who have jobs and/or a family to feed.
At the same time, we’re sure that they’re receiving the support they require, so kudos to MINDEF for recognising our Singaporean Sons’ contributions.
