‘I am old, I am slow’: Rider in S’pore asks road users to overtake on the right

Rider attaches sign urging drivers to overtake him on the right

In a poignant acknowledgement of Singaporeans’ notorious impatience on the road, a rider decided to attach a sign to the back of his motorbike.

The sign, complete with a large red arrow, reads:

I am old, I am slow. Overtake me by the right.

A 23-year-old student named Charmaine captured this sombre scene while sitting in the passenger seat of a car behind the rider.

Speaking to MS News, she explained that she first spotted the driver on Monk’s Hill Road in the Orchard area last Saturday (14 Sept).

She later shared the video on her TikTok, where it has since amassed over a million views and 86,000 ‘likes’.

A reminder for all road users to be kinder

Charmaine suspected the rider might have been a delivery rider. However, since her partner, who was driving, didn’t overtake him, she couldn’t be sure.

“I felt empathy,” she mused. “I assume he might have been honked at or scolded before, which is why he felt the need to put up that sign to gain understanding from other drivers.”

In posting the video, she hoped to spread a message of kindness and safety on the roads.

This sentiment was echoed in the comments, with many viewers feeling heartbroken that this rider had to resort to such a sign.

They urged everyone to practise road safety — after all, many of us have loved ones waiting for us at home.
