Trump claims victory in 2024 Presidential Election after key swing state results
Donald Trump declared victory in the 2024 US Presidential Election following a favourable showing.
The election lead-up was characterised by numerous shocking ups and downs, including President Joe Biden dropping out.
His replacement, current Vice President Kamala Harris, experienced an initial surge of popularity that overtook Trump’s predicted lead.
However, as Election Day drew closer, polls saw the likelihood of victory for either settle into a roughly 50/50 tossup.
The election ultimately saw little surprise with most of the results. States predicted to go for the Democrats and Republicans went to them.
It ultimately came down to the seven swing states of Arizona, North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
Trump secures key swing state of Pennsylvania
According to election forecaster 538, North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada all saw a slight Trump lead in the predictions.
On the other hand, they forecasted Harris as slightly ahead in Wisconsin and Michigan.
In the election itself, Trump secured North Carolina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.
Results in Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Michigan have yet to be called due to the number of votes still to be counted.
Many analysts predicted the seventh swing state, Pennsylvania, to be the most important of all.
538’s pre-election forecast was split nearly totally even, with a tiny 0.2-point margin in favour of Harris.
Trump ultimately pulled ahead in a close contest, gaining 50.9% of the swing state’s vote at press time.
Other than a projected Electoral College victory, Trump appears highly likely to win the popular vote, the first time a Republican candidate has done so since 2004.
He secured 51.2% of the popular vote.
Trump declares himself victor
While several news outlets including Fox News have called the election, others including the Associated Press have not.
Trump is currently at 267 Electoral College votes and Harris at 224, awaiting the remaining swing states and Alaska.
In a victory speech live from Florida before the election was officially called, Trump said, “God spared me for a reason.”
He had been the target of several assassination attempts, including one where he was wounded in the ear by a gunman.
Kamala Harris’s team has yet to make a statement.
