Woman Discovers Rotten Egg In Tray Of Eggs Bought From Giant Supermarket
It’s usually hard to tell whether an egg is fresh or not unless it’s cracked open.
One woman in Singapore did not have luck on her side when she bought a tray of eggs from a Giant supermarket. On the outside, the eggs appeared fine and the expiration date was still a while away.
However, when she cracked one open after cooking it, she realised that the egg had already gone bad.
House-brand eggs from Giant supermarket appear rotten
The woman shared her experience in a post in the Complaint Singapore Facebook group on Monday (20 Feb).
She claims to have purchased the house-brand eggs a week prior from the Giant supermarket at Woodlands North Plaza. The OP cracked an egg open after cooking it only to discover, to her horror, that the egg was black and rotten.
The spoilt egg also allegedly released an “unimaginably pungent smell”.
In spite of that, the best before date printed on the tray was “02/03/23”, so the eggs are not supposed to be expired yet.
MS News has reached out to the OP for more information. We’ll update the article if they get back.
Netizens offer tips, discuss date format
In the comments, netizens expressed disbelief towards the OP’s experience.
Some of them gave the OP tips on how to check for an egg’s freshness so as to avoid finding herself in the same situation again. One of the tips was to put an egg into water before cooking. An egg that has gone bad will supposedly float.
Others discussed the best before date on the packaging. Most of the users seemed to be confused whether “02/03/23” means 2 Mar 2023 or 3 Feb 2023.
Giant investigating matter
In response to queries from MS News, a spokesperson for Giant Supermarket’s parent company DFI Retail Group (DFI) expressed their apologies to the customer for her unpleasant experience.
They emphasised that the health and safety of their customers is a top priority.
However, they claim that they were unable to reach out to the OP to offer remedy. They thus urge the OP to contact them via their customer service centre hotline at 3129 8100 or email at Email.Us@DFIretailgroup.com.
DFI has also apparently started investigating the incident with their suppliers. At the point of writing, there have been no other complaints received for the same batch of eggs.
Additionally, store checks conducted for this brand of eggs on sale have reportedly revealed no abnormality.
“We take this incident very seriously and have stepped up our checks on our products to ensure that they are safe, fresh and of the high quality that our customers expect,” the spokesperson added.
