This SG50 Project About Neighbourhood Playgrounds Is Finally Worth Your Time

Playgrounds finally get their deserved time in the limelight

SG50 has been propping up everywhere we go. From car stickers to marathons to concerts put up in the name of SG50, some brands are just over-using the campaign.

Restaurants are also giving out SG50 promotions or changing their menus to accommodate the celebrations in order make a quick buck. Have a chicken wing in the name of SG50. Sneaky.

But once in awhile, a gem appears that truly captures the essence of SG50. We were excited to come across that captures a unique part of the Singaporean childhood in the past 50 years — our playgrounds.

Remembering Our Childhood Through Playgrounds

Called Play, this project documents 100 playgrounds around Singapore like you’ve never seen before, from the aerial view.

It is a visually stunning feature by photographers Stefen Chow and Lin Hui-Yi, working in tow with the SG50 committee. The playgrounds are featured on a beta website and is mapped across to the MRT lines so you can search for your favourite playground.

The site will be fully launched in July 2015.

Here are some photos that are already featured on the website. All photos are from Project Play.

Seeing the playgrounds from a high up view, invokes nostalgia. Like as though we are viewing it from a distance. Playgrounds used to be the talking point for kids. Perhaps this project will be too.
