Things to know about the brand-new investment game show Moomoo Money Master
Game shows can give such a thrill even from the comfort of your home, with nail-biting moments that keep you on the edge of your seat.
Good news for game show enthusiasts in Singapore — a new local game show unlike any other has just dropped, and it’s sure to challenge your understanding of investments.
Moomoo Money Master, produced by TheSmartLocal in partnership with Moomoo SG, premiered 26 Nov on TheSmartLocal’s YouTube channel, and it’s available to watch for free.
If its novelty isn’t enough to convince you, here are some fun facts about the game show straight from the producers themselves.
1. It’s Singapore’s first-ever investment game show
Moomoo Money Master is the first game show of its kind in Singapore, focusing on investment pitfalls and strategies. It’s driven by the producers’ dream to develop a large-scale gameshow locally.
“We looked to inspirations like the Physical: 100s of the world and ‘The Devil’s Plan’ and wondered, “How can we create one that resonates with Singaporeans”, shared creative and game master Mandon Lee.
Partnering with Moomoo SG, the team developed the concept of a survival game show that reflects common investment mistakes.
However, creating original content of this scale also came with risks, such as managing more than 50 contestants with diverse personalities, which the makers had to overcome as they went.
“With the many variables involved in the production of this scale, we could only, at best, make instinctive decisions,” he added.
2. They garnered about 150 sign-ups
Being the first investment game show in Singapore, it predictably piqued the interest of many, attracting both investment newbies and experienced traders.
After Moomoo SG posted a LinkedIn job ad for a “Money Master” offering a chance to win S$30,000 and a potential role at the company, the show garnered about 150 sign-ups.
It drew in participants of different backgrounds, from a person who runs a farming business to a research scientist.
“There is also Susan, who is a private tutor,” Steph, the show’s producer, shared. “She mentioned it’ll be nice to win, of course, but she came for the experience. Because it’s not every day you get a chance to be in a reality show.”
Interestingly, one contestant turned out to be an employee of another, and she ultimately became the only female finalist on the show.
3. Moomoo Money Master was shot at Ngee Ann Polytechnic
The series was shot at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, whose management has been supportive of the novel Singapore game show from the get-go, said Steph.
It helped that the venue had the necessary suite of equipment suitable for a large-scale production like Moomoo Money Master.
“Imagine a faculty dedicated to all things media, that’s the kind of passion we’d like to work with,” Mandon added.
Working with the students at the School of Film & Media Studies who are familiar with media production was an added bonus.
In exchange, the students who interned during the filming of the game show were exposed to a high-level commercial production and learned from a professional production crew.
“Their help and inputs added value to the output as well,” Mandon said.
4. It took 2.5 months to prepare
Although the game show was filmed over four days, the team spent 2.5 months on preparations, including casting, conceptualisation, game design, and logistics.
The set design created by art directors was a particular highlight, featuring a life-sized board game reminiscent of Monopoly and mock pasars (markets) where the contestants challenged their investment know-how.
A live dashboard was also created to track contestants’ portfolios during the games.
“I don’t how we did it, but we did,” Steph expressed.
Needless to say, the TheSmartLocal producers and crew’s hard work and collective geniuses may have done the trick.
5. In-depth research went into game creation
Games like Portfolio Pursuit and Moomoo Quest were meticulously designed based on the production team’s investment experiences, risk management principles, psychology, and game theory.
“Using the above as the base layer for the games, we then added ideas of investment asset classes and created parallels which would be palatable to the audience,” creative and game master Chloe Chew noted.
However, the most challenging part was ensuring that the games were foolproof.
The production team had to ensure that there were no loopholes that could result in game imbalances.
To refine the games, they consulted with Isaac Lim, Moomoo’s Chief Market Strategist of Investment, an indisputable expert in the field.
Multiple rounds of in-house game testing were then conducted to gain insight into possible interactions and gameplay strategies during the actual production.
