Dog in Thailand guards elderly owner’s body after tragic fall

A loyal dog in Thailand stood vigil over its elderly owner’s body after she tragically fell into a pond and passed away.

On Thursday (21 Nov), authorities were alerted that an 81-year-old woman had died after accidentally falling into a pond in the Chanthaburi province.

Police found the woman’s body face down in the water, while her four-year-old golden retriever, Taohu, remained steadfast at the edge of the pond, refusing to leave her side.

The dog, whose name means “tofu” in Thai, sat silently, keeping watch over her in a heartbreaking display of loyalty.

Nearby, authorities observed signs of slipping along the pond’s edge, indicating that the woman may have lost her balance before falling in.

When her body was recovered from the water, Taohu immediately rushed to her side.

The dog anxiously circled the area, desperately trying to get closer to its owner.

The heartbreaking sight deeply moved the woman’s relatives, who watched as Taohu barked continuously, as if grieving the loss of the woman who had cared for it since puppyhood.

Always by woman’s side

Neighbours told Thairath that Taohu was inseparable from its owner, always by her side as she worked in the fields.

They had even seen the pair earlier that day, with the woman trimming grass near the pond, and Taohu faithfully accompanying her.

The elderly woman had raised Taohu from a young pup, and their bond was evident in their every moment together.

Authorities concluded that the woman’s death was an accident, and her body was returned to her family for the funeral.
