The elderly man, surnamed Huang (transliterated from Mandarin), was found dead at about 10.25am on Tuesday (29 Oct).

A reader told Shin Min that they’d seen several police officers at the scene and believed that someone had died in the unit.

When reporters turned up that day at 2pm, they saw the deceased’s family members sorting out his belongings in his flat.

His 71-year-old son-in-law, named only as Mr Chen (transliterated from Mandarin), said his father-in-law’s body was taken away at 1pm.

Mr Chen told the paper that Mr Huang usually collected free meals from volunteers daily.

When he didn’t show up on Tuesday, the volunteers checked on him in his flat.

They found him lying motionless in his kitchen.

Deceased lived alone after family moved out

Mr Huang had four sons and one daughter, his son-in-law said.

His wife suffered a stroke more than two years ago.

As the elderly man was withdrawn, he became alienated from his family.

Eventually, his wife and children moved out of the flat, leaving him there alone.

Though the man wasn’t employed, he was in good physical condition besides suffering from the “three highs” of high blood sugar, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, Mr Chen added.

Thus, they do not know why he suddenly passed away.

Police don’t suspect foul play

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that a case of “unnatural death” had occurred involving an 82-year-old man.

He was found to have collapsed at home and pronounced dead on the spot.

Based on preliminary investigations, no foul play is suspected.

Further investigations are ongoing.
