Man in US rents out small ‘Harry Potter cubby’ underneath stairs
A man in the US has listed a small space he dubs a ‘Harry Potter cubby’ underneath his stairs on Craigslist for rent.
With how crazy housing prices can get in California, this otherwise absurd option is rather reasonably priced at only US$250 per month, or around S$330.
Rentable space in a small apartment
The listing was originally posted on 4 September 2024 and is titled “$250 Harry Potter cubby for very cheap + light chores”.
The space is part of a one-bedroom one-bathroom apartment in downtown San Jose, California. Listings on Apartment.com show studio apartments in the area go for at least US$1,800 (S$2,380) per month.
At around 3 feet by 10 feet, the space is just enough to fit a small cot, the listing says. Additionally, the listing also mentions that with some “jury-rigging” the little cubby can be blocked off entirely if the sublet wants a bit more privacy.
‘Harry Potter cubby’ comes with additional perks
Other than its dirt cheap price, the renter is also offering multiple perks to sweeten the deal.
He says he’s usually willing to share the food he cooks, adding that he’s not too bad at it. There are also no restrictions on the use of utilities within the apartment, with the man allowing free access to the kitchen, bathroom, and internet.
As a cherry on top, he’ll even let his sublet play on the Xbox.
All the perks come with a caveat that the sublet must not have a criminal record, drug addictions, or pets. He also forbids bringing guests over, but humourously added: “But seriously, who’d want to come visit this place?”
Additionally, the sublet will be expected to do some chores around twice a week.
Listing still available
Despite the affordable prices and attractive perks, the listing is still available after it’s been posted two months ago.
It was even covered by local news.
The listing has attracted some notoriety as the man has made multiple updates to the listing.
He has allegedly received many scam responses. This has prompted him to ask interested parties to include their current favourite video game in the email title, otherwise, he won’t respond to it.
