Landlord finds tenant’s remains after 18 months of unpaid rent & no contact
A landlord in Taipei’s Wanhua District was horrified to discover the remains of his 51-year-old female tenant, surnamed Lin, on Wednesday evening (20 Nov).
The shocking find was made when the landlord went to inspect the apartment, as the tenant had failed to pay rent for over a year and a half.

Upon discovering the skeleton lying on the bed, the landlord immediately contacted the police.
Cause of death under investigation
Police and forensic investigators arrived at the scene shortly after the report was made.
While the exact cause of Ms Lin’s death remains under investigation, it is believed she had been deceased for some time.
A neighbour reported noticing a strange smell in the building in April, which he thought might have been a dead animal.
However, the smell gradually faded, and he did not think much of it at the time.
Based on these accounts, the police suspect that Ms Lin may have passed away due to a serious illness while bedridden.
No contact since last year
According to the police, the landlord and tenant had not been in contact since May 2023, when she had called to inform him that she was sick and in the hospital, even losing her job.
She had requested a delay in paying rent due to her circumstances, which the landlord, sympathetic to her situation, agreed to.
Over time, the landlord forgot about the arrangement, and more than a year and a half passed without him collecting any rent.
The landlord, who lives outside the district, had been unable to visit the property frequently.
It wasn’t until he received complaints from other tenants about water being shut off that he decided to inspect the apartment.
Upon entering with his key, he found Ms Lin’s skeletal remains on the bed, which led him to immediately call the police.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding Ms Lin’s death.
Police have instructed her family members and neighbours to come to the station to provide statements.
